Girls Advisory Board

The Girls Advisory Board (G.A.B.) is a group of 12-15 high school aged GirlVentures alumnae developing themselves as leaders within and beyond our community. This volunteer position is part of our Leadership Development Program.

G.A.B. members serve as ambassadors for the GirlVentures at fundraising & outreach events, design curriculum & facilitate workshops around the community and develop their own leadership skills (including public speaking, decision making and self care). In 2007, our Girls Advisory Board applied for and was awarded a Youth Funding Youth grant. In 2010 our GAB girls will host their first-ever Walk-A-Thon in April.

The Girls Advisory Board meets monthly (September - May).  Meetings are led by the board Co-Chairs (high school seniors, elected by their peers), and hosted by Sarah Heath, GirlVentures Program Manager. G.A.B. members also receive one-on-one mentoring by our experienced volunteer mentors.

2009 - 2010 Girls Advisory Board Mentors

  • Ivonne Garcia
    Ivonne instructed July Project Courage this past summer, she works at UCSF Outdoor Programs guiding and coordinating trips for them and at Hamlin running their afterschool rock-climbing program.  She loves pupusas and is also a NOLS alum. She’ll be mentoring Callan & Ilse.
  • Megan Gathers
    Megan facilitated Goal Setting workshop for GAB in '08-'09, she works at Lululemon full time and teaches yoga on the side (among other cool things). She has mentored with Girlz Climb On 4 times and is quite accomplished at manifesting her goals!  She’ll be mentoring Erin & Adrienne.
  • Katrina Steffek
    Katrina works with a pretty rad organization that does socially responsible lending, but spends a lot of her work time at a desk so she’s thrilled to be spending some of her free time interacting with inspiring youth (that’s y’all)!  She’s mentoring with Girlz Climb On this fall and also loves traveling.  She’ll be mentoring Emma & Beatriz.
  • Sarah Winter
    Sarah works with Big Brothers / Big Sisters making lots of kids happy by matching them with cool mentors – and then she comes to GirlVentures to be a mentor herself.  She’s mentoring with Girlz Climb On this fall, recently fell in love with Salsa Dancing and will be mentoring Jolani & Zoe.
  • Ratha Chan
    Ratha is a 3rd grade teacher in Oakland who has mentored students of all ages, from 3rd grade to college.  She was a Girlz Climb On mentor in the East Bay last spring.  She loves to travel and loves great quotes.  She’ll be mentoring Avalon, Cecily and Briana.
