SEA KAYAK SPECIALIST

During the four day sea kayak expedition, the sea kayak “specialist” is the lead guide and the Course Director is the assistant guide on the water. The instructors paddle with the girls in doubles. Once the group is off the water and land based, the leadership is handed back to the Instructor Team. The role of the Sea Kayak Specialist with the assistance of the Course Director is to provide leadership, instruction and safety briefings regarding the Sea Kayak expedition.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Provide leadership related to sea kayaking activities, coordinate safe landings and launchings with the support of Instructor Team and Course Director
  • Ensure on-water safety at all times and solid group management skills in all conditions
  • Teach and/or oversee all sea kayak related skills and safety briefings with staff support
  • Ensure safety at all times, manage group and assess risks with staff support
  • Ensure that GirlVentures safety procedures are practiced and communicated
  • Make age and skill level appropriate decisions concerning itinerary and weather conditions in collaboration of Instructor Team
  • In the case of an evacuation, support the decisions of Instructional Team and Course Director and coordinate logistics with the support of Sea Trek staff.
  • Collaborate with instructional staff to frame the climbing day/s and debrief the day in ways that promote GirlVentures’s mission
  • Help facilitate/lead the sea kayak training day with the assistance of trainers at Staff Training.

Experience/Requirements:

  • Attend at least the first two days of Staff Training including the GirlVentures Sea Kayak training day.
  • Proven competence and experience as a Sea Kayak Instructor and/or Guide. ACA or BCA training/certification a plus.
  • Demonstrated risk management skills for group management and sea kayaking activities ie. rescues and towing skills a must.
  • Current Wilderness First Responder preferred and current CPR
  • Ability and desire to collaborate with other staff
  • Reliability with a commitment to high quality program delivery
  • Desire to understand and work with the unique needs of girls, ages 11-14
  • Commitment to empowering girls and women
  • Must be willing to work with Sea Trek
  • Local knowledge of Tomales Bay and Richardson Bay course areas a plus
