Outdoor Adventure
YNI

Joie Armstrong Scholars
Part of NatureBridge, the Armstrong Scholar program offers young women a 12 day backpacking course in the High Sierra in late July/early August.  This program seeks diverse applicants with a “clear sense of how the program will truly benefit you.” Dates: July 25-Aug 7, 2010.

  1. Openings: up to twelve (12)  
  2. Deadline: Early April    
  3. Age: 15-18yrs 
  4. Cost: $150 (scholars will receive $1500 in assistance)
  5. Experience: All experience levels welcome, no experience necessary

NOLS

National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS)
NOLS offers a variety of co-ed rigorous outdoor courses appropriate for girls “who are motivated to learn outdoor skills and develop leadership, are in good health, physically and emotionally, and are socially responsible.”

  3. Age: minimum 14yrs
  4. Cost: Varies - partial-to-full scholarships awarded based on financial need
  5. Experience: previous backcountry experience essential

Outward Bound Pinnacle Scholar
outward boundThe Pinnacle Scholarship Program provides 14- or 22-day backcountry expeditions for low-income, high-potential youth.  You’ll receive financial support, pre-course guidance and mentoring, and post-course support; in return you’ll complete 40 hours of community service.

  2. Deadline: Mid-February      
  3. Age: minimum 14 years
  4. Cost: $0 - full scholarship & free boots!
  5. Experience: Interest in outdoor expeditions, minimal experience required

Leadership

ETCEnvironmental Traveling Companions (ETC) Youth LEAD program
The LEAD program is about Leaderships, Environment, Adventure and Diversity.  Twelve, twenty-one and twenty-four day rafting and kayaking adventures. Students of all cultural backgrounds encouraged.

  3. Cost: Varies - sliding scale available for low-income families.
  4. Experience: Students of all abilities encouraged to apply

mosaicprojectlogoThe Mosaic Project Cabin Leader
Serve as a mentor for the 4th and 5th graders at a 4-night/5-day outdoor school addressing issues of difference & peace. Youth leaders will attend a training retreat weekend in Napa (March or August) prior to serving as cabin leaders for a one-week session in the spring or fall.

  2. Age: at least 15 yrs old & high-school sophomore

Summer SearchSummer Search
Selected students receive access to two (2) challenging summer programs (as sophomores and juniors), year-round mentoring throughout high school, and, as seniors, receive access to additional college-preparatory resources. Summer Search students also receive ongoing support as alumni throughout college.

    TEAM

Teen Environmental Action Mentorship (TEAM) / Headlands Institute
Part of the Headlands Institute, TEAM is a paid internship program in envrionmental education. TEAM starts with an 8-day summer training at the Headlands Institute (HI), then continues through March with regular weekly responsibiliites at HI, including leading interactive environmental games with elementary students and feeding intertidal marine lab animals. Each intern is paired with a Field Educator to learn first-hand about environmental education through observation and the creation of an intern-led classroom lesson they'll present to their own community.

  1. Openings: up to sixteen (16)                         
  2. Deadline: April 30              
  3. Age: current high school Freshmen, Sophomores & Juniors
  4. Cost:  $0 - interns are PAID a monthly stipend!
  5. Experience: applicants should be open to exploring environmental studies & education; interested in developing leadership; and willing to expereince outdoor adventures.
