Girlz Climb OnMake a Difference - Mentor an Adolescent Girl

We are currently recruiting mentors for our Girlz Climb On rock climbing mentorship program! Girlz Climb On is now offered at climbing gyms in San Francisco, Oakland, and Belmont.

10 girls in grades 6-9 are paired one-on-one with an adult female mentor for weekly meetings. In a structured environment using a well-developed curriculum, mentors support girls as they learn technical rock climbing skills and valuable life lessons. We are currently looking for female volunteer mentors (age 21 and over) to participate in this unique program. Climbing experience is a plus, but you do not need to be an expert.

Mentor Qualifications:

The following mentor qualifications are a PLUS but not necessarily required:

  • Coaching, teaching or mentoring experience with adolescents (informal experience with friends & family counts...)
  • Diversity/anti-oppression training or experience (women of color strongly encouraged to apply)
  • Passion for empowering young women (i.e.: a desire to share your belief that girls can do anything)
  • Climbing/belaying experiencing (if you have belayed and/or can climb a 5.8 or higher we are already impressed )

Strong candidates without climbing experience will be considered IF they are able to commit to taking a belay class AND practice climbing at the gym a few times prior to the start of the program.

How to Apply to be a Mentor:

Fill out our online Mentor Application or download the PDF here (coming soon!) . Please also feel free to contact Sarah Heath, Program Manager, by calling her at 415.864.0780 ext. 302 or emailing sarah@girlventures.org to request an application.

Program size is limited to 10 mentors and 10 girls. Mentors must be a minimum of 21 years old. Mentors are accepted on a rolling basis. An interview may be required. Applications will be considered 2-3 months prior to the program start date. Decisions will be made 2-4 weeks prior to program start.

The San Francisco and Oakland programs will fill up - please do not delay in submitting your applications.

We are always looking for South Bay women - please help spread the word!

Feel free to call Sarah if you have any questions.
