Her early roots in Northern WI and Upper Michigan exploring the woods and lakes with her family made Northern California’s mountains, lakes, ocean and forests feel like home. As an avid hiker, camper, and kayaker whose engagement, marriage, honeymoon and young daughter’s early years have all been centered in our National and State Parks and the Bay Area’s amazing open spaces, she’s thrilled to be professionally embracing that love for the outdoors, building empowered leaders, and connecting communities as part of the Girlventures team. Keri holds a Master’s degree in Voice from San Jose State University, a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education from University of Wisconsin, Madison, and an advanced Certified Fund Raising Executive certification. Over 36 years of teaching with organizations around the country deepened her commitment to ensuring equity for young people to thrive. Her executive leadership with ETM-Bay Area, Oakland Youth Chorus and PEBCC brought transformative change, greater financial stability, and inclusive programming to those organizations and 50 Bay Area schools impacting 20,000 children and youth. She is a proud member of the Board of Directors for Oakland Rotary #3 and serves on their DEI committee. He has been working in this field ever since. During Tryka’s 21 year career in Wilderness Education, he has instructed and directed courses and programs all over the country primarily serving girls and queer young people. Tryka’s experience includes work with the North Carolina Outward Bound School, Thompson Island Education Center, Passages Northwest (Bold and Gold), Positive Adventures and Point Reyes Outdoors. Before starting his position as Program Manager, Tryka was an Instructor and Course Director for GirlVentures from 2004-2011. Tryka is grateful to have been trained and mentored by some of the best youth workers in Outdoor Education and considers it a privilege to pass on these teachings. He has a deep commitment to social justice work, and to making this field more accessible. Erin’s relationship with GirlVentures began at age 11 as a full-scholarship participant in the Bay Area, where she spent four years developing leadership, confidence, and a sense of belonging through multi-day backpacking and sea kayaking expeditions. At age 15, she joined staff and began what would become a more than 15-year relationship with the organization. Over that time, Erin has held every role available within GirlVentures—including administrative and logistics intern, assistant instructor, program and logistics coordinator, field instructor, course director, logistics manager, and field staff trainer. Erin holds a Bachelor of Arts in Adventure Education and Human Development from Prescott College, with a focus on program development and management. She has served as Adjunct Faculty at Prescott College, mentored adults ages 17–36 in immersive field-based programs, and managed instructional teams serving thousands of students annually. She has taught middle and high school English Language Arts, Social Studies, math, and science; and has lived and worked across the Southwest, Midwest, and West Coast, building programs and teaching in Arizona, California, Kansas, and beyond. She contributes to GirlVentures a rare combination of institutional knowledge, field expertise, and educational leadership. Outside of work, Erin spends as much time as possible adventuring with her two dogs, finding grounding and perspective in wild and quiet places. As a student she has been on Project Courage, Transitions and Girls Climb On. After GIrlVentures, she went on a month long NOLS course that brought her to the alpine lakes of Wyoming. She then worked as an Assistant Instructor for the Transitions course the summer after high school and has returned every year since as in Instructor or Course Director. Avalon graduated from Bard College in 2018 with a BA in Anthropology. She is passionate about the work that GirlVentures does and is ever grateful for the place it made for her in the outdoor community. She is continuing to learn about what it means to create more access and inclusion within the outdoor world. She worked as an Admissions Associate for the 2014 season, during which she also became a field instructor. She's since worked community and summer courses for GirlVentures as well as wilderness courses with NOLS, Eagle Rock School, and Dunn School. Prior to work as an outdoor educator, Narinda graduated from UC Irvine with a BA in English literature in 2007 and worked in the nonprofit sector in Los Angeles 2007-2012. Narinda recently joined the Stanford Adventure Program as part-time and field staff. She has worked for the North Carolina Outward Bound School for the past 7 years, cycling through a variety of titles and responsibilities ranging from intern, logistics, instructor, whitewater specialist, and course director. Miah has had the privilege of working with, adventuring alongside, and learning from hundreds of students, and feels so lucky to build community with folks in wilderness! She is especially grateful for having had the opportunity to listen and learn from the stories and experiences of adjudicated youth, veterans, trauma survivors, and youth of color. Prior to joining GirlVentures, she had been working in the field of outdoor education since 2013, and outside of working with GirlVentures, she has spent the past two years serving as an AmeriCorps member with the Bishop Paiute Tribe's Environmental Management Office where she facilitates environmental education programming and coordinates land restoration projects. McKenzie is certified as a Wilderness First Responder through NOLS, a Single Pitch Instructor through the American Mountain Guides Association, and a California Environmental Educator through the Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education. She also holds a B.A in Applied Linguistics with a Minor in Spanish from Portland State University. McKenzie is very curious about the connections between community and land, the healing nature of the outdoors, and believes that time spent in wilderness brings out the best in people. She is committed to her role in creating a more just and loving world. McKenzie has tremendous gratitude for all of the youth, instructors, and staff that she has had the honor of working with at GirlVentures, and for the way that this work continues to help her grow as a person. In her years at the YMCA of Greater San Francisco, she has had the opportunity to connect city youth to nature and the outdoors, supported people of all ages in their health and wellness goals, and provided physical and social wellbeing programs to seniors in the Fillmore and Japantown districts. Ivonne has a Bachelors in Biology and Environmental Science & Policy from Smith College and a Masters in Women & Gender Studies from San Francisco State University. Ivonne is excited to bring her passion and experience to GirlVentures once again - 15 years after she first became a GV Instructor! This experience led her to a career in leading backpacking trips and outdoor education programs across the country, particularly in Yosemite National Park, CA. While she loved being in the field, Lizzie was equally drawn to the behind-the-scenes operations and analytical work that supported these missions. This interest led her to pursue management roles and ultimately earn an MBA from UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business, where she specialized in nonprofit finance. Lizzie is thrilled to bring her expertise and enthusiasm to GirlVentures. With a deep commitment to youth development, Banke gained valuable experience as a green workforce and sustainability instructor in Chicago, where she worked with students on projects like bike mechanics and urban garden design. Her connection to GirlVentures runs deep, having previously volunteered on the Youth Advisory Board and in the Girls Climb On program. Now, Banke is excited to return as a Board Member and contribute to the organization's mission of leadership development and empowering women-identifying youth. By day, Banke works in the industrial real estate sector. The natural abundance in Northern California drew Meghan to the Bay Area in college, and ever since she has spent her free time hiking, skiing, camping, and exploring outdoors with friends and family. Meghan is excited to contribute her expertise working in nonprofit operations and grantmaking to her role on the GV Board of Directors. At work, she currently helps manage a grantmaking portfolio on the Packard Foundation's Environment & Science team. Prior to Packard, she previously worked on Tides' fiscal sponsorship team to provide operational support and strategic advising to nonprofits ranging in issue area. An East Coast native and 20‑year San Francisco resident, she holds a BS/MS in EECS from Columbia University and a JD from UC Law San Francisco (formerly UC Hastings). In a former life, Whei has explored underwater in the Great Barrier Reef (Australia), Bali, Zanzibar, Maldives, Alaska and Hawaii. She has trekked Annapurna Base Camp (Nepal), Mt. Kinabalu (Borneo), and Machu Picchu (Peru), along with numerous U.S. peaks. She champions outdoor experiences for girls as a pathway to leadership and exposure to STEM. Today, she's an avid fly fisher, hiker, backpacker, climber and overall explorer. As Manager of External Affairs for the San Francisco Giants and a former Division II softball player who grew up playing baseball, Jen has spent her life breaking down barriers for girls and women in sports and beyond. She brings this commitment to GirlVentures as a Board Member, having previously served as a mentor for the Girls Climb On program. After many years leading marketing operations for tech companies, she now works as a development consultant for nonprofits. Maria is also the co-founder of She Hikes Too, a hiking and outdoor adventure company for women. Maria has held board positions for various bay area non-profits over the years, and is passionate about philanthropy. Maria holds a MA and BA in Industrial Design from San Francisco State University and lives in the Santa Cruz Mountains with her family. Taking a break to focus on family, she has dedicated her career to serving youth, especially multilingual learners, having grown up in the Bay Area as the daughter of refugees. She received dual Bachelor's degrees in Art History and Communication from UC Davis, and a Master's degree in Organization & Leadership from the University of San Francisco. Erin aspires to raise her own family to thrive in the outdoors, and looks forward to bringing her personal and professional experiences to GirlVentures. After serving as a summer camp director, WWOOF-ing around Australia and teaching STEM to elementary-aged children, she moved to San Francisco to gain access to the variety of wilderness that California offers. Her passions for exploring nature and empowering girls led her to GirlVentures and she is honored to serve on the board and contribute to the mission of the organization. At work, Sylvana leverages systems and technology to help individuals build their skills, with a special emphasis on diversity and inclusion. Previously, she worked with INGOs to improve local government service inclusion for displaced persons and served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Senegal. Outside of work, she can be found exploring new neighborhood spots in Berkeley (moved just about a year ago from SF) or out hiking or biking with my partner, Dharan, and our cattle dog, Lasya. Youth leadership and outdoor education have been close to Jessica's heart as a lifelong camper - from summer camps growing up, to spending my college summers as a counselor at a global youth leadership camp in Maine, to present day hiking, backpacking and kayaking adventures with friends and family.
